Chapter 9

Worldwide Drug Initiative, El Paso, Texas

Every team member was present, gathered in the briefing room in a free-for-all think-tank, bouncing ideas and intel to see what gelled. Having returned from all parts of the continent with their own little snippets of information, each individual contributed to the pool.

Thurston stood at the front of the room with Ferrero. Between them was the whiteboard on which was written all the input. Sometimes a low-tech visual was the only solution to lay out what they had for the benefit of everyone at once, ultimately to help them work things out.

“So, this is what we know,” she said out loud. “We have a guy selling poisoned drugs who we are yet to identify. When personnel were sent to investigate both crime scenes, an open attack was made on our resources at each site by whoever is behind this. The shooters were US marshals or dead people. The cartel we have in the picture, identified by a tattoo on the arm of the seller, has had their leader taken out by—we assume—whoever is manufacturing the poisoned drugs. At the moment, we also have a Ranger team on the ground in Colombia, who should have eyes on the factory in a couple of hours. Am I missing anything so far?”

“The part where the CIA is involved,” Axe stated.

“I agree.” The general sighed. “It all points to CIA Black Ops. However, unless they have a rogue agent, I don’t think they would sanction the mass killings of innocent Americans. Melissa has cleaned a lot of bad apples out since she’s been in charge.”

“It also doesn’t explain the marshals and why they tried to kill us,” Cara said.

“What we have here, ladies and gents,” Knocker started, “is a dead set conspiracy theory.”

Thurston stared at him. “What?”

“You’ve got drugs—poisoned drugs, that is—coming into the country. Crooked marshals, dead ex-servicemen come back to life, and a dead cartel boss. All of it takes money—a lot of money. They’re not afraid to come after us, so that means they have power. You seem convinced that it’s not the CIA, so that suggests someone in the private sector.”

“You mean, a security contracting firm is behind this?” Traynor asked.

Knocker shook his head. “This is more than your regular security firm. This is something bigger. I’ll bet my left nut that all those bodies disappear—”

“He’s right,” Swift interrupted.

All eyes in the room swiveled to the redheaded computer tech.

“The bodies never made it to the morgue. They disappeared on the way, trucks and all.”

“See?” said the SAS man. “It takes money and power to do shit like that.”

“Cleaning up.” Kane nodded in agreement.

“But what’s the point?” Cara asked. “We already have IDs.”

“The better question is,” Thurston said, “who are they?”

“They are the Cabal,” a new voice answered.

They all stared at the figure in the doorway. The CIA had arrived.
